30 women to take part in the Descent of the Risco de Famara

Around 30 women will take part in the Descent of the Risco de Famara this afternoon.

The event commemorates the journey that generations of La Graciosa women had to make until the 1970s, crossing the strait daily from their island to Lanzarote, carrying fish and other products up the cliff to Haría and other villages, before descending to the beach again to be ferried home in the afternoon.

Older gracioseras still remember the gruelling journey, which was captured by Haría’s photographer Javier Reyes.

Wearing traditional dress, the women will descend the steep cliff at around 4pm and make their way to the Playa del Risco, where five vela latina boats will be waiting to take them home.

Líneas Marítimas Romero is offering a special service from Órzola for people who wish to see the arrival at the Playa.
