Teguise building scheme halted

A building project in the town of Teguise has been paralysed after archaeological remains were discovered on the site.

The project, on Calle Higuera, involves the construction of eight family homes. However, the Cabildo’s Heritage Department has ordered a halt to works on the southern part of the plot for six months, while archaeological experts assess the importance of the site and survey any damage already done.

The promoters may face possible sanctions for not carrying out an archaeological check prior to commencement of the works.

Calle Higuera is 80 metres from the centre of Teguise, Lanzarote’s old capital and one of the richest historical sites on the island.
