Scientist dies in fall in Arrecife

A scientist died after falling from the second floor of the Casa de los Arroyo in Arrecife yesterday afternoon.

Juan Baztán, a researcher at Bordeaux University who was in Arrecife attending the international MICRO conference on microplastics, died after falling from a height of around two metres in the staircase area of the historical building.

Emergency services attempted to revive the victim but were unsuccessful.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort has expressed official condolences to the family of the scientist who co-founded the Marine Sciences for Society network.

The Casa de los Arroyo is one of the best-preserved colonial buildings in the capital and is currently home to the Biosphere Reserve Department and the island’s Geopark.
