U.S. Yaiza sack coach Maxi Barrera

CD Union Sur Yaiza have sacked their coach, Maxi Barrera, after a string of poor results that has left the southern team six points adrift in the relegation zone of Spain’s Second Federation.

Barrera was the coach who led Yaiza to a historic promotion last year, as the team triumphed in the play-offs from the Third Federation, winning the chance to play football at a national level for the first time in their history.

However, despite a bright start to the season, Yaiza have not won in 14 games and have lost their last six games.  They now face a bitter struggle to survive in a brutal league where five of the eighteen teams will be relegated, and a sixth team will face a play-off to avoid the drop.

Club President Bernardo Povedano said “This has not been an easy decision” and explained “We have been forced to take this step to try to get the squad to react, now that the transfer window has closed, and we cannot move any more pieces.”

Povedano thanked Barrera for his hard work and dedication and said, “He will always go down in history as the man who won us promotion to the Second Federation”.
