Tuesday’s heavy rains caused flooding in several areas of the island as the DANA (isolated high-level depression) that has already caused chaos in the western Canary Islands finally reached Lanzarote.

The rain commenced on Monday, with extremely heavy amounts falling on inland Tías and northern areas of the island, but Tuesday brought more widespread downpours.
Parts of the Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen were flooded, with several frontline businesses suffering water damage. A wall of the Apartamentos Jables Bermudas also collapsed onto the pavement, although fortunately no one was injured.
Access roads to Arrecife were temporarily closed and sewage pipes backed up in various parts of the capital.
The good news is that the rain has given a good soaking to Lanzarote’s countryside, which badly needs it. In weeks to come we’re likely to see a much greener island, and there’s a good possibility of a memorable wildflower display.
Today and tomorrow are predicted to be a little dryer, but a high probability of rain is forecast for the weekend and the beginning of next week. There are currently no warnings, suggesting that it will be light, scattered showers rather than downpours.
