Mount Teide rose by a centimetre over the last year

Scientists are monitoring Mount Teide in Tenerife after detection systems revealed that the earth rose by a centimetre over the last year at four monitoring stations on the volcano.

Itahiza Domínguez, of the National Geographic Institute (IGN), said that the deformations do not mean an increase in the probability of an eruption in the short or medium term, but that extra observation is required. As a result, inclinometers will be installed at a depth of 20 metres.

“We know that we could have an eruption in Tenerife, but the precursor events can occur over two years or over 50. We must continue monitoring and take measures to prepare the population with drills,” said Domínguez.
