Pope Leo XIV has expressed an intention to visit the Canaries later this year as part of a broader Spanish visit.
The Vatican had announced that Pope Leo intends to fulfil the pledge made by his predecessor, Pope Francisco, to visit Spain and the Canaries, but was unable to fulfil before his death last year.
Details of the visit are as yet unresolved, but Leo is likely to visit the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, as well as Madrid and, most probably, one or both of the larger Canary Islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The choice of the islands is related to recent Papal statements of compassion and support for migrants.
