The St Patrick’s Festival kicked off last Sunday in Puerto del Carmen, the tourist resort that attracts the largest number of Irish visitors to Lanzarote and is home to 900 people from Ireland.
The Canarian and Irish communities enjoyed a day of celebration last Sunday with a hurling demonstration, in which eight mixed teams made up of residents and visitors took part. There was also a Canarian wrestling exhibition, with an explanation of the techniques and values of the sport, and two Irish participants were invited into the ring.
This year’s St. Patrick’s Festival included the launch of a 5-kilometre charity walk in aid of the Shine Association, which is dedicated to raising awareness of and supporting mental health. Sixty people took part, joining this initiative to promote social responsibility.
