The Tinajo Rally, which was scheduled for today, has been postponed due to the presence of Hubara bustard nests on one stretch of the track.
Evesports, the organisers of the rally, informed participants yesterday that Tinajo Council has received a letter warning of the presence of breeding bustards. The Hubara is a protected species that lives in the sandy wastelands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
The rally had been opposed by Ecologists in Action, SEO/Birdlife and other ecological groups, who have previously warned about the effect of rally sports on native species.
Evesports said it would seek an alternative date to celebrate the event.
