In a week which has brought two calimas, a swarm of locusts, rain, strong winds and sunshine, plenty of islanders will be wondering “What now?”
The answer is “more wind”. Yellow alerts for wind and rough seas remain in place until 9pm on Saturday night, and it remains a very wise idea to stay away from northern coasts, as heavy swells continue to arrive from the north. Red flags will fly on the worst-affected beaches, and access to piers and other exposed areas of the coast will be forbidden.
As a result of the wind warning, the councils of Arrecife, Teguise and Yaiza have suspended all outdoor activities until 9pm.
The wind is expected to be stronger in the southern areas of the island, such as Yaiza and Tías, and gusts of up to 80 kph could be experienced.
The “boomerang calima” of yesterday, which saw north winds bring airborne dust back down to the island, will have dispersed, leaving plenty of dust for people to sweep up.
Yesterday’s strong winds caused several callouts for emergency services, as gusts blew the roof off a carwash in Tahiche and caused tree branches and cables to fall. Fortunately, no one was injured.
