Cabildo grants 62,000 euros to restoration of gofio mill

The Cabildo’s Heritage Department has dedicated €62,000 towards the restoration of Lanzarote’s only functioning gofio mill in San Bartolomé.

The José María Gil mill was built in 1870 and is currently the only place on the island that grinds gofio, the toasted cereal meal that has been a traditional staple of the Canarian diet for centuries.

The mill operated for 50 years until 1920 before the building was abandoned. Later classed as a listed building, businesswomen Silvia Gil and Lourdes Rodríguez relaunched the mill in 2018 and won important awards for their products in 2021.
