Cabildo President calls for emergency water declaration

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort has stated that he will recommend the declaration of a water emergency at the next state of the island meeting.

Betancort explained that, up until now, the Cabildo had not had projects that could be carried out within the time limits of an emergency, but that “we have been working like ants” to prepare them.

An emergency state would speed up the procedures for awarding contracts and also free funding. Betancort claims this could be used to increase output at the island’s desalination plant to 20,000 cubic metres a day.

Meanwhile, Lanzarote’s water crisis continues as eleven towns and villages suffered water cuts yesterday.  The north of the island, San Bartolomé and Tías were the areas most affected.
