Cabildo to appeal coastal limit

Lanzarote’s Cabildo will appeal against the decision of Spain’s Coastal Department to forbid any new developments within 100 metres of the coasts.

The decision comes after the Coastal Department decision last month to apply the maximum easement zone of 100 metres to almost all of Playa Blanca.  This would mean that n further building, or development is permitted within this boundary.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said “We are seeking a common strategy to appeal against the extension of the coastal protection limit to 100 metres, a unilateral decision taken by the state which will seriously affect Playa Blanca given that it threatens various planning projects around Montaña Roja.

Betancort claimed that “This will start in Playa Blanca but end up in Órzola, affecting planning on the whole island and meaning that businesses and individuals will have trouble even putting up a pergola.”

The Cabildo’s decision received support from the Mayor of Yaiza, Lanzarote’s Chamber of Commerce and several local businessmen at a meeting yesterday.
