Lanzarote Cabildo left off EU funding list

Lanzarote’s Cabildo’s application for €20 million of European development funds has been turned down by Spain’s Revenue Department.

The Cabildo’s application did not appear in the provisional list of successful applicants for the grants from the Local Development Strategy 0f the European Regional Development Fund.

However, Tias and Teguise, both of whom were hopeful of being awarded the funds when we interviewed council representatives recently, have been successful and will be considered for around €9 million each.

The funds are intended to promote “integrated and inclusive social, economic, and environmental development, culture, natural heritage, sustainable tourism, and security in urban and urban-rural areas.”

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort congratulated Tías and Teguise and said that the island government would appeal the decision. María Jesús Tovar, the councillor in charge of the application process, said “Now is the time to fight for our rights.”
