New ‘Trails for All’ Course Promotes Inclusive Mobility

The Cabildo is taking a significant step towards making the island’s natural beauty accessible to everyone. Through its Department of Social Welfare and Inclusion, and in collaboration with the Association Trails Without Barriers, a training course titled ‘Trails for All’ (Senderos Para Todos) has been launched.

Scheduled for September 26, 27, and 28 at the former Daos school in Puerto del Carmen, this hands-on workshop is a key part of the island’s ongoing Accessibility and Inclusion Strategy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The course will offer participants the unique opportunity to learn how to use the Joëlette, a one-wheeled sports wheelchair designed for rough terrain. Training will be provided at both level one and two, empowering attendees to safely assist individuals with mobility restrictions on trails across the island.

The Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, extends an open invitation to the public to get involved. She states, “With this type of training, we want to break down the 50% barrier of people with disabilities who are unable to enjoy their free time as they would like and show that anything is possible in our territory.”

Acuña further emphasised the government’s commitment, adding, “The island’s government emphasizes the need to collaborate with citizens to eliminate obstacles and barriers so that people with disabilities can enjoy social activities and an active life like everyone else.”

Spaces for this essential and transformative course are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
