Canarian President, Fernando Clavijo, said yesterday that the regional government would not propose a moratorium on holiday rentals owing to the legal consequences that such a decision could have. However, he stated that the measure could be carried out by Cabildos and Ayuntamientos.
Clavijo was responding to Luis Campos, of the Nueva Canarias party, which has called for a moratorium. Campos complained that the number of holiday rentals had in fact increased since the announcement of the government’s new law, and that the current government has not built one new home.
Clavijo insisted that his government had acted with “courage”, proposing a law on holiday rentals, but underlined that he is not in favour of applying a moratorium from the government.
