The Mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, has taken centre stage at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid to present the council’s vision for the future of Puerto del Carmen.
The presentation formed part of a collective showcase by Lanzarote’s tourist municipalities, Tías, Yaiza, and Teguise. Mayor Cruz outlined Tías’ strategic roadmap, placing immediate focus on a series of high-profile 60th anniversary events. These include the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, which attracts thousands of visitors, and the ZEConsciente programme. This initiative features workshops, talks, exhibitions, and environmental actions, culminating in a Tourism Gala where ZEConsciente awards will be presented.
In his address, the mayor detailed significant investment flowing into the area. He confirmed the municipality is deep into its III Plan for the Modernisation, Improvement, and Increase of Competitiveness in Puerto del Carmen. This ambitious plan channels nearly 400 million euros into the rehabilitation and renewal of infrastructure and services, including 45 private and 10 public projects.
Puerto del Carmen will see the implementation of the Tías Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. With a budget of 16 million euros, the plan prioritises pedestrians and cyclist lanes, aiming to create more orderly and efficient mobility. This initiative is designed to improve local coexistence, elevate the tourist experience, and boost the overall attractiveness of the destination.
Mayor Cruz concluded by praising the “importance and significance” of the AMTC both within the archipelago and globally. He highlighted the collaborative AMTC project, “Soy Canary Green”, which unites all 14 member municipalities in driving sector digitisation and accelerating the transition to a greener, more efficient tourism model.
