Trade unions issue warning about Lanzarote’s water supplier

Trade unions have warned that Lanzarote’s water supplier, Canal Gestión, appears to be “dismantling its workforce” on the island and suspect it may be abandoning the service before the year’s end.

Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) and Intersindical Canaria (IC), issued a joint statement warning of a “drastic reduction” in employees from 280 to 207, and alleging that “retirements and leaves of absence have not been covered.”

It has been known for some time that Canal Gestión’s owners are meeting with other companies with a view to delegating responsibilities for Lanzarote’s service

“The water crisis in Lanzarote and La Graciosa is an emergency that cannot be ignored,” the unions warned, , while pointing out that “it is necessary for Canal Gestión Lanzarote and the Water Consortium to assume their responsibility and work together to implement lasting solutions. The survival of our island depends on it.”
