Ecologists In Action have denounced the release of sterilised cats in Caleta de Famara and the island of La Graciosa.
The ecological group have issued a formal complaint about catch, neuter and release schemes that are supported by the Cabildo and Teguise Ayuntamiento, claiming they contravene Article 54 of the Law of Natural Heritage, which prohibits the release of domestic animals in natural spaces.
The group claims that colonies of feral cats are contributing to the extinction of local birds, reptiles and mammals, and that this is especially important in La Graciosa and Caleta de Famara, where many migratory bird species are found.
They have called for authorities to accommodate cats in specialised centres or place them in “responsible adoption”.
